How are the images of our Milky Way galaxy created when we are located inside it?

Images of our own galaxy are from conjecture. Certain areas can be observed, checking the distance of stars, the dust clouds in between them, their speeds etc. can give some indications of what certain sections look like. However, not everything can be checked, so no image of our galaxy is completely true to life.
